About Us:

The department is made up of experienced, successful and committed mathematics teachers who pride themselves on providing an excellent mathematics education attempting to ensure that all pupils go on to realise their full potential.  All pupils do a mathematics GCSE qualification. We start building towards the GCSE from year 7 as we take a five-year approach. The maths curriculum we follow contains work on number, algebra, ratio and proportion, statistics, probability and geometry. During their lessons they will cover the essential content but also do a lot of work on applying maths to solve problems. Many teaching styles are used to accommodate all types of learners, ensuring that all pupils enjoy and feel confident in their mathematics lessons.

Schemes of Work:

Students follow a five-year scheme of work at either higher or foundation level. The course is broken down into individual topics, details of which can be seen in the links below.

Assessment Procedures:

Following each topic area, students will sit a topic assessment to ascertain the level that they are working at and how this compares to their target pathway. A traffic light sheet (PLC) will be filled in and closing the gaps tasks will be completed to support future progress. There will also be a cumulative assessment in the summer to check the understanding of all topics covered so far in the year.

Homework guidance:

Homework will be set regularly. The purpose of the homework will normally be to consolidate work done during lessons or to support with revision for an upcoming assessment. There may be occasions where students are asked to complete tasks on Maths Watch for which they each have a school login.

How can you help?

Any extra maths you can encourage your child to do will help with their success in the subject. Mathswatch is a great starting point, containing video clips, interactive questions and related worksheets on everything in Maths from Year 7 to 11.
