Year 6 Transition
Welcome to our Year 6 Transition page
We understand how daunting starting at secondary school can be – for students and for parents and carers – it’s a big step-up!
Our aim is to ensure that all our new Y7 students quickly become part of our Lode Heath family and get the most out of being at our school as possible.
All our new Y7 students will be invited to spend a day with us in the summer term. On this day they will meet their new form tutors, get to know their form group, and have the chance to explore our school, taking part in some lessons and spending their social time with our current students.
We then offer a chance to attend summer school – this is a great way for students to get to know their classmates and have lots of fun – although we call it school, there are no lessons. In previous years, the activities have included climbing walls and visits from lots of outside speakers.
When the long holidays end and September arrives, we have a carefully planned induction programme for all our new Y7 students.
Y7 students arrive at their first day earlier than the rest of the school. They are looked after by their form tutor for the day and given all the information they need to be successful.
Y7 students take part in an extended induction – they have one lesson a day during their first week learning all about us, and what we expect from them as the newest members of our family.
We understand that adjusting to secondary school is not easy, so Y7 students are given a couple of weeks to get settled. During this time, they get to go to lunch and break early to avoid the queues, and no detentions are sat.
We can’t wait to meet you!

Hello New Year 7
Moving Up to 'Big' School!
Below is a useful animation that has been produced by the Anna Frued centre. The animation helps to demonstrate to students what they might be feeling is normal and shares different concerns. This would be beneficial to all students and parents to watch. We hope this video puts your mind at rest if you are someone who is feeling a little nervous or worried about coming to school. Hopefully this video and advice will support you during this new and exciting time!
Virtual Tour
We know you'll be joining us very soon, but we think it is a good idea for our new transition students to have an idea of the layout of our school before they join us. Take a look at our short virtual tour video below and see if you can ace Mr Hatton's tour quiz at the end!
Advice for Parents and Carers
Supporting children's transition to secondary schoolis an evidence-based guidance for parents and carers, written with input from clinicians at the Centre and teachers.
This short guide provides tips about how children preparing for, or going through, the transition to secondary school can best be supported by their parents and carers. It includes guidance which explains why the transition can be difficult for some children, and practical advice such as talking and connecting with the new school, as well as suggested resources that children and parents and carers may find useful.
